As I look back on this past year I am so grateful for business. There has been some dissapointments along the way (missed job opportunities, closed doors on bank financing) but I can say that God has truly blessed Cotner Building Company in 2011. When so many other competitors have been struggling to find work, I have been juggling jobs.

So what is the source of our business? What transpired this year to make 2011 successful? I have been analizing the business looking for trends and windows of success I can build on. Here is what I have found:

Cotner Building Company built 3 models/specs this year. Two were featured in the Canyon County Parade of Homes in June.

As of December, we had built 5 custom homes and have 2 more custom projects in the ground with 3 more in design stage for 2012.

Of the 7 custom projects, 5 were built for Empty Nester Clients and 4 were cash transactions with no banks involved.

Remodel work picked up for us as well, with 5 jobs. Two of those were major VA remodels for disabled veterens. It has been a blessing to let your talent serve those who have paid the most.

But for all the homes and remodels we have been involved with this past year, its the relationships I will cherish the most. From working with real estate professionals in my industry to expanding my client base, the relationships we build will be valued the most.

To kick off 2012, my next blog post will be about goals for next year and the education aspect of driving my business. Until then, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all of yours!

(If you are reading this, consider yourself one of those who I cherish the most!)

Congratulations to Tim and Karen Moore on their new home just completed in Rockwell Village. This custom designed 1800 sq ft plan with RV garage called the “Settle-In” features custom cabinets, granite counter tops, hardwood floors, and custom ceiling moldings. This home is designed with our popular “accessible” features such as no thresholds for ease of entry, 36″ wide doors in extra wide hallways and custom tiled accessible shower with double bench and two hand-held shower heads.

This home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and a separate den or living area. All of this and our special Energy Star Plus features like a variable speed high efficient gas furnace with a modulating gas valve that only distributes enough gas to heat your home to the set point on the thermostat. That combined with our upgraded touch screen digital programmable thermostat makes this home extremely comfortable and saves the Moore’s hundreds of dollars each year in utility costs.

Please enjoy the quick video tour of the home. For more information on active Empty Nester living, please schedule a coffee with the builder. I would love to engage in a conversation on how we can help you achieve your dream of a new home designed with your needs in mind.

Today was the first day of the Canyon County Parade of Homes for 2010. It also was the day we were featured in the builder showcase section of the Idaho Statesman. The full page article touched on our Empty Nester line of custom homes as featured in Rockwell Village subdivision. Needless to say we had numerous potential clients come through and spend some time with us.
I was able to identify with numerous people who see the need for a true empty nester home. One that can meet their needs for many years to come. The people who came through stayed around for long periods of time and it was so enjoying to get to really talk with them. To see the excitement as we demonstrated Aging-In-Place products and features of our model home.
I truly believe that our success will be directly tied to meeting the needs of the baby boomer generation. And I am so excited to be able to offer a product that clearly resonates in this market. Today was a day that I love being a builder!

Cotner Building Company is currently working on becoming a certified aging-in-place (CAPS) specialist. We believe that in order to best serve our empty nester clients we need to better understand their needs. Becoming a CAPS certified builder will give us the ability to custom design homes for empty nester couples who value staying in their homes for many years.

What started out as a resource for home remodelers, Cotner Building Company is using CAPS as valuable knowledge to design and build new homes that are “aging friendly” homes. We want to be known as the builder who builds for life…your life.

We will be posting more info continuously about this and other specialized areas for us. For more information you can visit our Empty Nester Living page on this website.

What is a (CAPS) Certified Aging in Place Specialist?
The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) is a designation program by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) that teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling and home building industries: home design and modifications for the aging-in-place.

The NAHB RemodelorsTM Council, in collaboration with the AARP, NAHB Research Center, and NAHB Seniors Housing Council, developed the Certified Aging in Place Specialist program to provide comprehensive, practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.

A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) has been trained in:

the unique needs of the older adult population

aging-in-place home modifications

common remodeling projects

solutions to common barriers

The Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) designation is a reliable way to identify professionals to modify your home.

Cotner Building Company approaches home design in a wholistic manner. Who will live in the home? How will they live in the home? Is it for utility, entertaining, a landing spot for an adventurous couple, or a family that needs room to grow?

The key to building your home is to know that your home is not like any other home – it’s unique, a blend of form and function that compliments the lives within.

At Cotner Building Company we listen and understand the desire that you can see, in your mind’s eye, and then consult you on how to make your home even better. Our years of custom home design experience provides us a solid foundation upon which we draw options and ideas around energy efficiency, lifestyle and accessibility for later in life .

The key notion of a custom home project is that sustainability is fully integrated into the design of the home. Sustainability in construction and efficiency; and sustainability to match your lifestyle.

We believe in the concept that a custom home starts and ends with relationship. We have established long lasting relationships with our clients. We feel that to provide a product that is truly tailored to the client, you have to spend time getting to know them. We value these relationships and that is why we feel we can offer a product that transcends generations. A lot of our custom referels are through client family ties. We have a strong belief in family and it shows through our work.
